We take the guesswork out of plant sourcing — identifying what will thrive in your garden and sourcing it from reputable Irish growers.
The single biggest mistake people make when planting is buying what looks attractive in the garden centre without knowing whether it will thrive in their specific soil, light, and climate. A plant that's wrong for your site is not just a wasted investment — it's a source of frustration that puts people off gardening. We remove that risk. Our plant and tree sourcing service identifies the right species for your conditions, sources them from reputable Irish nurseries and growers where possible, and delivers them to your garden ready to plant. For larger projects, we source semi-mature specimens that provide immediate structure without the wait. For organic kitchen gardens, we source organic plug plants, bare-root fruit trees, and heritage variety seed potatoes. The principle is always the same: the right plant, from a source you can trust, delivered at the right time of year to give it the best chance of establishing well.
Plant sourcing starts with honesty about your site. We spend time understanding your soil — its pH, texture, drainage, and the organic matter level — before recommending a single species. A plant described as 'suitable for most soils' in a catalogue is not always appropriate for the specific conditions in your garden: a heavy Wicklow clay garden needs different choices than a free-draining coastal garden in Dún Laoghaire, and an upland site in Roundwood requires a fundamentally different approach than a sheltered Foxrock plot with mature loam. We prioritise native and near-native species where they fit the design brief. Native plants have co-evolved with Irish pollinators and wildlife; they are generally more resilient, need less intervention once established, and support the local ecosystem in ways that exotic imports simply cannot. Where a design calls for more decorative species, we choose cultivars that are disease-resistant and suited to the Atlantic climate rather than Mediterranean lookalikes that will struggle through a wet Wicklow winter. We source from Irish nurseries where possible. Irish-grown plants are conditioned to Irish weather and establish more reliably than plants grown under glass in continental Europe and shipped in bulk. We avoid the worst of the large-scale import trade, where plants are grown fast, root-pruned for easy transport, and sold before they're genuinely ready.
The plants we source reflect our ecological commitments. Native species — hawthorn, hazel, rowan, wild cherry, blackthorn, holly, and native grasses — are first choices for hedging, woodland edges, and wildlife-friendly borders. They support fifty to five hundred times more invertebrate species than most ornamental exotics, provide food and nesting sites for birds and mammals, and require minimal intervention once established. Where a design calls for ornamental species, we choose those that offer ecological value: single-flowered varieties accessible to pollinators, species with late-season berries and seed heads that feed birds through winter, and plants that provide larval habitat for native butterflies and moths. We avoid peat-grown stock wherever possible. Peat is a finite, carbon-rich habitat; plants grown in peat compost arrive with a hidden environmental cost. We source from nurseries using peat-free growing media and specify this when placing orders.
