Vegetable Garden Set-up

Grow Your Own, Done Right from Day One

We design, build, and plant vegetable gardens tailored to your space, your soil, and the seasons you'll actually be harvesting.

Vegetable Garden Set-up That Works for Your Site

There is a particular pleasure in walking out to your garden and picking something for dinner. We want more people in Wicklow and South County Dublin to experience it — but a vegetable garden that produces reliably starts with the right foundations. The wrong location, compacted soil, poor drainage, or the wrong crops for your microclimate will produce a frustrating first season and an abandoned raised bed by summer. We set up vegetable gardens that work from the start. That means choosing the right position (south-facing, sheltered, close enough to the kitchen to make daily picking easy), building raised beds to the correct depth and dimensions, filling them with a compost-rich growing medium, and planning a crop rotation that suits your household's appetite and the Irish growing season. We then hand over a plan for the year ahead — what to sow when, what to harvest when, and what to do in the gaps.

What's Included in Our Vegetable Garden Set-up

Site assessment to identify the best position for sun, shelter, and access — the single biggest factor in vegetable garden success
Raised bed design and construction using durable, untreated timber sized for your space and the crops you want to grow
Soil preparation: filling beds with a professionally mixed growing medium of compost, topsoil, and organic matter suited to your target crops
Initial crop plan tailored to your household's preferences, the Irish growing season, and your site's specific microclimate
Sowing and planting of the first season's crops — seeds, plug plants, or bare-root stock as appropriate
Written seasonal guide covering what to sow and harvest month by month, watering needs, and basic organic pest management
Follow-up visit at the end of the first growing season to assess performance, adjust the plan, and prepare beds for the following year

How We Approach Vegetable Garden Set-up

We don't build vegetable gardens and move on. The set-up visit is the beginning of a relationship with your soil. We start by understanding your goals: are you hoping to grow salad leaves for daily picking, root vegetables for winter storage, or a full kitchen garden covering every season? Then we assess the site — measuring sun hours, checking drainage, noting proximity to trees whose roots might compete. We size beds for the realistic amount of time you'll spend gardening (three 1.2m-by-2.4m beds that you maintain well will outperform six beds you can't keep on top of). We fill with a premium compost-rich medium and plan a rotation that moves crops around beds year by year to prevent nutrient depletion and soil-borne disease. Our organic-first approach means no synthetic fertilisers in the beds — we feed the soil with compost, mulch, and organic amendments, and let healthy soil grow healthy vegetables. The result is a system that improves year on year, not one that needs annual inputs to stay productive.

Who Benefits from a Vegetable Garden Set-up

Homeowners who want to grow their own food but don't know where to start — we take away the guesswork and set things up correctly from the beginning
Families looking to introduce children to where food comes from — a well-designed vegetable garden produces reliably enough to make it a year-round activity, not a failed experiment
Organic households who want control over how their food is grown — our set-up is 100% organic and pesticide-free
People recovering from illness or looking for a productive, grounding outdoor activity — we design beds at the right height and in the right location to minimise physical strain
New homeowners with bare gardens who want to start productively, not just ornamentally

Growing Food the Organic Way

A vegetable garden is the most direct expression of the organic-first philosophy we bring to all our work. The beds we set up are fed entirely through compost, leaf mould, and organic matter — no synthetic fertilisers, no pesticides. Healthy soil produces healthy plants that resist pests and disease naturally; we design the growing system around this principle from day one. Companion planting is built into our crop plans where appropriate — marigolds alongside brassicas to deter aphids, nasturtiums as trap crops, fennel and dill to attract beneficial insects. We encourage composting garden and kitchen waste on-site, closing the nutrient loop and reducing reliance on bought-in inputs. By the second and third year, a well-managed organic vegetable garden becomes largely self-sustaining, feeding the soil from its own waste and producing more reliably than a garden propped up by synthetic inputs.
